INTERVENTION & CASE MANAGEMENT PROVIDERS

Intervention and Case Management Standard (BHSO 4006)

The Behavioral Health Standards Organization (BHSO) established the Intervention and Case Management Standard (BHSO 4006) to define a clear benchmark for non-clinical behavioral health professionals who guide individuals and families through moments of crisis and the earliest stages of recovery. Interventionists and case managers frequently represent the first organized response to behavioral health emergencies, requiring not only lived experience and practical knowledge, but also ethical judgment, structured methodology, and the ability to navigate complex emotional, medical, and legal systems.

BHSO 4006 is divided into two specialized certification pathways, each designed to address the distinct needs of the populations served while maintaining a unified standard of professionalism, ethics, and accountability.

Substance Use Intervention and Case Management

Professionals operating within the substance use pathway must demonstrate competency in evidence-based intervention models, addiction recovery principles, family systems dynamics, crisis management, and treatment placement navigation. Providers are expected to understand the continuum of care for substance use disorders and to coordinate effectively with detoxification, residential, outpatient, and recovery housing programs.

Certification under this pathway requires completion of an approved education track, documented field experience in substance use-related crises, a full ethics review, and maintenance of professional liability insurance. Case management responsibilities include long-term recovery planning, relapse prevention coordination, advocacy, and transparent communication among clients, families, and treatment providers.

Psychiatric Intervention and Case Management

Professionals certified within the psychiatric pathway must demonstrate specialized knowledge in mental health crisis intervention, psychiatric stabilization processes, risk assessment, and coordination with clinical and medical providers. This track emphasizes navigating psychiatric systems of care, supporting families during acute behavioral health episodes, and facilitating safe transitions between levels of treatment.

Certification requires completion of approved psychiatric intervention training, documented experience managing behavioral health crises, adherence to strict ethical standards, and professional liability coverage. Case management under this designation focuses on ongoing care coordination, advocacy, continuity of treatment, and maintaining clear boundaries and accountability across all stakeholders involved in the client’s care.

Programs and individuals who meet the requirements of BHSO 4006 demonstrate a commitment to more than outcomes; they demonstrate ethical stewardship during some of the most vulnerable moments in a person’s life. Those who fulfill or exceed these expectations may be granted Commissioned status, recognizing their leadership in crisis response, family engagement, and long-term behavioral health navigation.
