DETOXIFICATION PROGRAMS

The Behavioral Health Standards Organization (BHSO) created the Detoxification Services Standard (BHSO 4003) to set a new benchmark for safe, ethical, and clinically-supervised withdrawal management. Detoxification represents one of the most vulnerable stages of recovery, where medical precision, immediate crisis response, and client dignity must converge without compromise.

Under BHSO 4003, licensed detox programs must operate with continuous medical oversight, including 24/7 on-site nursing staff and immediate access to physicians trained in addiction medicine, psychiatry, or emergency care. Each client must receive a face-to-face medical evaluation upon admission and regular medical monitoring throughout the withdrawal process. Programs must be equipped with the facilities, emergency response systems, and clinical protocols necessary to manage the full spectrum of withdrawal risks, from seizures to psychological crises.

Clinical care within Commissioned Detox Programs must extend beyond medical stabilization. Programs must offer individual counseling, early discharge planning, and psychosocial support to ensure a foundation for ongoing recovery is established before discharge. Every client’s journey through detox must be documented through validated clinical assessments, and each transition must be planned carefully to reduce relapse risks.

BHSO 4003 mandates a strict adherence to ethical conduct, client rights protections, and operational transparency. Programs are prohibited from engaging in patient brokering, coercive practices, or unethical referral arrangements. Every aspect of care, from marketing to discharge, must center on the safety, autonomy, and dignity of the individual in crisis.

Meeting the BHSO Detoxification Services Standard is a mark of operational integrity and clinical excellence. Programs that fulfill or exceed these requirements are eligible for Commissioned status, a distinction recognizing their role as trusted stewards of one of the most critical phases of recovery.
